Adam Buxton and Joe Mount Collaborate on Debut Album 'Buckle Up' Featuring Dreamy Single 'Pizza Time'
Adam Buxton joins forces with Metronomy’s Joe Mount to release his debut album 'Buckle Up' and the whimsical lead single 'Pizza Time'.
Adam Buxton's Musical Debut: 'Buckle Up'
Adam Buxton, the London-based actor, comedian, and popular podcaster known for The Adam Buxton Podcast, is stepping into the music spotlight with his first-ever album titled Buckle Up. The 15-track collection is scheduled for release on September 12 via Decca Records. You can pre-order or pre-save the album here.
Buxton's musical venture is powered by the creative collaboration with Joe Mount, the frontman of the electronic pop band Metronomy, who takes the lead as the album's producer. In addition, Pete Robertson, renowned for his work with artists like Beabadoobee, Jane’s Addiction, and The Vaccines, also lends his production talents, notably on the dreamy opening track.
The Whimsical Single 'Pizza Time'
The album’s lead single, "Pizza Time," mixed by Joe Mount, is a charming homage to Buxton’s teenage son, Nat. It captures a nostalgic and tender moment of Nat, often found in a bathrobe, eagerly waiting by the oven as a pizza bakes at 11 a.m.
The opening lyrics poetically paint this picture:
"He’s looking for pizza / He’s pleased to find there’s a pizza there / Slides it in the oven and 10 minutes later, it’s pizza time."
The track exudes a warm, hymn-like vibe that beautifully blends sincere emotion with a touch of humor.
The song is accompanied by an official visualizer crafted by Guy Larsen, who previously collaborated with Buxton on the Up In Smoke podcast, a project that earned a Webby Awards nomination for Scripted Fiction.

Buxton's Honest Reflection on His Music
Adam Buxton humbly describes his album as "not actual music," joking that an alternate title could have been Adjacent To Music. He openly admits that the music he's encountered often eclipses his own work, saying:
“The more music I listen to, the more I strongly feel that I have no right to be near a record contract, especially when there are so many talented people who would love to have one!”
Despite this self-deprecating humor, Buxton's dedication shines through as he pushes his creative boundaries.
Behind the Scenes: The Making of 'Buckle Up'
Decca Records approached Buxton about making a solo album five years ago, unaware that they were dealing with what Buxton calls a “master of self-deluded overcomplication.” His vision? A fascinating blend of musical influences: “Berlin-period Bowie and Eno going for lunch with Radiohead and Nina Simone at Brian Wilson’s beach brasserie.” He even dreamed of featuring a Bulgarian choir.
Ultimately, Joe Mount was brought in to produce, fulfilling Buxton’s hope of creating “a Metronomy record with my voice.” Even Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead weighed in, humorously commenting on Buxton’s guitar skills after hearing a demo of "Pizza Time":
“I think you’re hamstrung by your limitations on the guitar.”
Still, Buxton persists, undeterred by any shortcomings.
Creative Collaboration and Inspirations
Adam Buxton has had a longstanding collaborative relationship with Radiohead, even producing a promotional video for their 2016 album A Moon Shaped Pool. When working with Joe Mount, Buxton made a conscious effort to listen and follow Mount’s guidance, especially when his own ideas felt overly ambitious.
Joe Mount reflects on their creative process:
“I loved making this record with Adam and am very proud of my involvement in it. We chatted about artists like Ween, The Rutles, Eric Idle and Harry Nilsson whilst recording, and I would often think to myself, ‘What would a car full of teenagers enjoy hearing?’ Hopefully we’ve made something a car full of teenagers will enjoy.”
