Chance the Rapper’s Star Line Shines Bright at Adler Planetarium with Airbnb Experience

Experience the cosmic magic as Chance the Rapper unveils Star Line in a unique Adler Planetarium event powered by Airbnb.

There’s something about Chicago that makes music feel larger-than-life — like it’s not just heard but felt deep in your bones. On a balmy July evening, the city’s magic fused perfectly with the cosmos at the Adler Planetarium, where Chance the Rapper dropped his first album in six years, Star Line. But this wasn’t your average album release. Thanks to Airbnb Experiences, it became a cosmic meditation, an intimate journey through sound, history, and community.

A Cosmic Night: Chance’s Fifth Collaboration with Airbnb

Cocktail hour kicked off with a splash of Star Line–inspired watermelon margaritas, setting the tone for a night that felt both exclusive and warmly familiar. Chance himself made the rounds, greeting guests with that signature grin. “I feel pretty loved,” he shared, “My kids are here, my mama’s here… and y’all wanted to spend time sitting in a room with me listening to my music.” It was a simple yet profound reminder — this was more than a party; it was a gathering of hearts.

Airbnb and Chance have teamed up before, but each event outdid the last in immersive artistry. This one, wrapped in cosmic wonder, felt like a new chapter — one where music and the universe collide.

Inside the Dome: An Album Listening Like No Other

Once inside the planetarium dome, Chance invited everyone to sink into oversized bean bag chairs, a casual setup that contrasted beautifully with the grandeur of the surroundings. Each guest found a notepad and pen tucked inside a goodie bag. Chance encouraged us to use them, just as he had while crafting Star Line — jotting down feelings, images, and thoughts sparked by the music.

This wasn’t about passive listening. It was a deep dive into introspection and radical self-reflection. “If there’s anything that stands out, I do implore you to let it sit with you,” Chance said. “If you have questions about it, I’ll take a few at the end.”

A Celestial Soundscape: Music Meets the Stars

As the music rolled, the planetarium’s domed ceiling transformed into a dazzling canvas. Stars and constellations danced in harmony with every beat, every lyric, painting a visual backdrop that made the album’s title feel like destiny fulfilled. Underneath that celestial dome, Star Line turned into a living constellation, a sonic map of a journey both personal and universal.

The sound was pristine, delivered through headphones that blocked out distractions, letting every note land perfectly. Lyrics illuminated in sync with the songs, while archival clips from recording sessions and live dancers brought the music to life. Chance’s children wandered around, their laughter and eventual slumber a tender reminder that this night was about family as much as art.

Visual projections and lyrics create an immersive Star Line experience.

The Story Behind Star Line: History, Hope, and Heritage

I had the chance to ask Chance about the album’s name during the Q&A. “The project’s called Star Line,” he explained, “It’s named after the Black Star Line shipping company owned and operated by Black folks in the ’20s, started by Marcus Garvey and the UNIA. The goal… was to create a larger collective network for Black folks across different diasporas.”

This history isn’t just a footnote; it’s woven into the album’s fabric. Chance elaborated, “The Black Star… was also a symbol of hope across different political movements… whether it’s in Ethiopia with Haile Selassie, or in Ghana with Kwame Nkrumah. Stars are also just a thing in Black history, period — if you think about the North Star that Black folks followed to get to the North in the US.”

Reflecting on the album’s creation, Chance shared how it was a mix of celebration and thoughtful intention. “It was a lot of traveling… so with that, there is hella partying, for sure. But it was also very thoughtful and intentional.” The final stages were bittersweet, moving from a whirlwind of ideas to a focused, poignant statement. For Chance, capturing the moment mattered more than chasing perfection.

When asked to sum up Star Line, he didn’t miss a beat: “It’s poetic, moving, and it is available now for pre-order.”

Writings on the Wall: The Airbnb Connection

Chance described the event’s concept, called Writings on the Wall, as a way to bring fans closer to the music’s meaning in an intimate setting. “We use lighting and projection to give you a visual and a fully encompassing space. It’s 360 projection… all the senses are engaged, and the mind is there because you have the lyrics in a readable format that emphasizes rhythm and can expound on double meanings or symbolism in the music.”

The planetarium dome was the perfect venue for this vision. Lyrics and visuals enveloped us, turning each track into a living, breathing artwork.

This night could easily have taken place in a theater or club, but the Adler Planetarium — combined with Airbnb’s immersive approach — made it feel otherworldly. Airbnb Experiences are crafted to immerse people inside worlds they would usually only glimpse from afar, and this event hit that mark spectacularly.

A Night to Remember: Star Line as a Constellation Map

Great experiences linger long after the last note fades. Hearing Star Line for the first time in this celestial context transformed the album into more than just music — it became a constellation map of stories, history, and hope. Under the stars, with Chance’s artistry and Airbnb’s vision guiding us, we traced that map in real time.

If you missed the event, Star Line drops officially on August 15th — an album that promises to be as much a journey as a soundtrack.
