Daron Malakian Unveils Third Scars On Broadway Album
System Of A Down’s guitarist and vocalist Daron Malakian is back with exciting news! He has announced the upcoming release of the third Scars On Broadway album titled ‘Addicted to the Violence’, set to drop on July 18. This album will be the first since 2018’s Dictator, and Malakian describes it as “some of the best stuff I have to offer.”

New Single ‘Killing Spree’ Tackles Tough Topics
Along with the album announcement, Malakian released the powerful first single ‘Killing Spree’. This track boldly explores the often "taboo" subject of mental disorders and societal detachment.
Malakian shared in a statement:
“It’s a taboo topic people might be afraid to talk about. Kids have rebelled forever. Mental disorders have always been there too. In the last 15 years, we’ve seen a generation that will walk into school and kill other students. I’m not glamorizing or advocating it. I’m just saying, ‘The kids are on a fucking killing spree.’ It’s what I see in front of me.”
He continued with a striking observation:
“I’m not just talking about killings either. You’ll see a lady who’s getting beaten up on the subway and people around her aren’t even helping; they’re fucking recording on their iPhones. We had automatic weapons fifty years ago, and nobody was doing this. I blame the mindset. We now have a generation that is so detached and desensitized. They’re totally unemotional and unempathetic. There’s no respect for life.”

Behind the Scenes: The Making of ‘Addicted to the Violence’
Daron Malakian is the primary writer, producer, and composer behind the new album, with contributions from longtime collaborators Orbel Babayan on guitar and Roman Lomtadze on drums. This combination promises a dynamic and authentic Scars On Broadway experience that fans have been waiting for.
Reflections on System Of A Down’s Future
Earlier this year, Malakian expressed mixed feelings about the possibility of a new System Of A Down album. He confessed:
“I’m not sure how much I want that anymore.”
The iconic band’s last studio effort dates back to 2005 with two landmark albums: Mezmerize and Hypnotize. While there hasn’t been any official confirmation about a new album, frontman Serj Tankian once mentioned that any forthcoming record would represent “a fresh start in a brand new way.”
In a recent interview with legendary producer Rick Rubin, who worked with Malakian on those classic albums, Daron said:
“It would have been nice to see where the band would have evolved if we kept putting music out. If we put out an album now, it’s just so far away from [‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’] it doesn’t continue the story to me.”
He added that while a “new story” with the band was something he once desired, he feels differently now:
“I’m not sure how much I want that anymore – I’m sure people won’t be too happy to hear that from me. I’m not at the same place I was maybe 10 years ago.”
System Of A Down’s Recent and Upcoming Tours
Despite uncertainty about new studio material, System Of A Down remains active on stage. They wrapped up their South American tour in April and May and are gearing up for a North American tour in August and September. These dates, all sold out, mark their most extensive run of back-to-back shows since 2017, a significant shift from their usual one or two shows per year.
Why ‘Addicted to the Violence’ Matters
With the new album Addicted to the Violence, Daron Malakian is clearly channeling raw emotion and contemporary issues into his music. This project seems to be a cathartic response to the world’s growing detachment and desensitization — a plea for awareness through fierce, powerful art.
