From Songwriter to Superstar: Netón Vega’s Rise in Música Mexicana
From Songwriter to Superstar: Netón Vega’s Rise in Música Mexicana
Netón Vega is making waves in música Mexicana, blending corridos with reggaeton and hip-hop to become a breakout star.
A Passionate Voice Emerges
“I’ve put in time in this industry as a songwriter, so it’s another achievement for me that people are getting to know who I am as a singer,” Netón Vega shares, settling comfortably on the porch of his Los Angeles Airbnb as the summer dusk paints the sky behind him. Known for packing his corridos with fierce passion and attitude, Vega’s voice softens as he adds in Spanish, “It means a lot for me to sing to people with music from my project. I never imagined that we would be able to do everything that we’re doing now.”
Blending Tradition with Modern Swagger
Hailing from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Vega grew up steeped in the sounds of música Mexicana legends like Chalino Sánchez, Ariel Camacho, Alfredo Olivas, and Gerardo Ortiz. But Vega didn’t stop there. He also absorbed the raw energy of Mexican and U.S. rap, citing Cartel de Santa and Tupac Shakur as major influences. “Even though I don’t understand much English, I really like hip-hop,” he admits. “I always try to listen to a lot of different types of music and I believe that mix of genres comes through in my music. It’s something that I do in my own way.”
From Behind the Scenes to Center Stage
Before lighting up the stage with his own voice, Vega was behind the scenes as a songwriter. What began as a hobby took a professional turn when Peso Pluma took interest in Vega’s songs “Rubicon” and “La People,” both featured on Peso’s Grammy-winning album Génesis. Thanks to his connection through his cousin Tito Double P, Vega’s songwriting talents became a key part of Peso’s rise.
At just 22, Vega has since collaborated closely with both Peso Pluma and Tito Double P, and they’ve returned the favor on his debut album Mi Vida Mi Muerte, released this February. Peso even features on Vega’s fiery corrido “Morena.” Vega explains, “Peso and Tito were both a great source of support for my album. I’ve also helped them with their albums, and between us, that’s what we always do. We also give each other a hand. There’s always support and unity among us. I have a great relationship with them on a personal and professional level.”
Breaking Boundaries with Genre Fusion
Mi Vida Mi Muerte has become the top-selling música Mexicana album in the U.S. this year. Vega’s unique blend of corridos with a hip-hop edge shines, especially on the slick title track where he flexes his rap skills. But his versatility doesn’t stop with música Mexicana. Vega’s playful reggaeton hit “Loco” marked his bold entry into a genre still relatively fresh for Mexican artists. Alongside Mexican rapper Alemán, he scored another reggaeton hit with “Te Quería Ver,” blending their distinct styles to push boundaries.
“The explosion of ‘Loco’ is bien loco [very crazy],” Vega laughs. “We made that song without knowing if it would work out because reggaeton wasn’t one of my strengths, but people loved it and made it go viral. Now that people have accepted me making reggaeton music, I’m going to keep it going. To be a part of this movement of artists from Mexico that are bringing our Mexican vibe to other genres, it feels chingón [fucking awesome].”
A New Chapter: The "Qué Motor" Single and Collaborations
Vega’s reggaeton journey continues to accelerate with his explosive new single “Qué Motor,” a song that he says is “more me and my style.” Meanwhile, he’s been busy in the studio working on collaborations with some of the biggest names in Latin music. Over the past months, Vega has featured on Belinda’s Indómita album, Grupo Frontera’s “La Buena Eres Tú,” Xavi’s “Hija de Papi,” and tracks with Óscar Maydon and Gabito Ballesteros. More surprise collaborations are on the horizon.
“These are artists that I used to listen to before that I never imagined that I would record music with,” Vega reflects. “This is all new for me. I’m getting to know people that I never thought I would meet. I’m working with all types of artists like reggaetoneros. It’s all been an experience of growth and learning for me.”
Taking the Stage: Vega’s First U.S. Tour
Netón Vega’s momentum is undeniable as he prepares for his first nationwide U.S. tour. He kicked off the journey with two sold-out shows at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California, on June 27. “I didn’t think that we would be able to do concerts like this so quickly,” Vega admits. “Wherever my fans want me to go, I’ll be there.”
His rise from songwriter to superstar continues to inspire, blending cultural roots with modern sounds and breaking new ground in música Mexicana and beyond.
“There’s always support and unity among us. I have a great relationship with them on a personal and professional level.” — Netón Vega
