Gene Simmons Charges Over $12K for "Roadie" Experience Due to High Insurance Costs
This article reveals why KISS’ Gene Simmons is charging over $12K for a "roadie" experience, citing astronomical insurance costs related to the event.
Why the High Price Tag?
KISS frontman Gene Simmons recently made headlines for charging an astounding $12,495 for a lucky fan to become his "roadie" for a day. The bassist and singer has been under scrutiny for this decision but defends it by pointing to the "astronomical" costs associated with insurance.
Dubbed ‘The Ultimate Gene Simmons Experience,’ this exclusive offer allows one fan to assist with load-in at the venue, help set up the stage, and even enjoy a backstage pass during sound checks. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but the cost certainly raises eyebrows.
The Economics of Rock 'n' Roll
Simmons defended the hefty price during an interview with New Jersey’s 95.9 The Rat, explaining that rising insurance costs are the driving factor behind the price tag.
“Here’s the deal: when I was a kid and I went to see [Jimi] Hendrix or somebody, of course I enjoyed the show and really got off on it,” he stated. “But I didn’t know what it was like.”
He expressed a desire to share the behind-the-scenes experience with a fan. The experience includes everything from breakfast with rock stars to setting up equipment and being on stage.
The Need for Insurance
Simmons elaborated, saying, “Now, having said that, we only do one roadie for a day per show. And I’ll tell you why — because nowadays everything is so litigious. … That means everybody sues everybody for no reason.”
He pointed out that in today's world, the risk of lawsuits makes it impractical to allow multiple fans to join the experience.
“So if you get a paper cut, somebody gets sued. And that’s just the way life is here in America — much more in California, by the way."
According to Simmons, the price not only covers the experience itself but also “financial and legal exposure.” He explained that one bad experience could lead to lawsuits costing “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” making adequate insurance a necessity.
What to Expect During the Experience
The roadie experience doesn’t end when the show starts. It continues throughout the performance, where the fan gets to enjoy a special performance with Simmons.
“You ride with me to the gig. You can set up amplifiers and drums to your heart’s content. You’re onstage, right offstage to my right. You can video the crowds, whatever. And I pull you onstage to sing a song with me,” Simmons added, painting a picture of what the day entails.
Postponed Tour Plans
Simmons’ North American tour, originally set to kick off recently, has been postponed to “early 2026,” although no specific reasons were given for the delay, except that it is not health-related.
In the meantime, KISS has announced an “unmasked” show in Las Vegas later this year, which will feature a special live performance from former band member Bruce Kulick, along with other guests and activities.
