Huawei Freebuds 6 Review: Stylish Comfort or Just Another Open-Design Earbud?

Explore the noise-cancelling performance and sound quality of Huawei Freebuds 6, blending semi-open design with active noise reduction.

First Impressions: Love 'Em or Leave 'Em?

Honestly, I wasn't initially sold on the Huawei Freebuds 6. I've lately gravitated towards wireless earbuds with in-ear designs, and I've never been a fan of semi-open styles—they usually don’t stay put well in the ears and fall short when it comes to noise cancellation, whether active or passive. And sound quality? Often disappointing.

Yet, after giving these a spin, my perspective shifted.

Priced around £120 (roughly $150 USD), these earbuds could stand shoulder to shoulder with the AirPods 4 featuring noise cancellation and the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 packed with similar features, including active noise cancellation (ANC). Equipped with dual drivers and high-quality Bluetooth codecs, the sound is quite solid, while the sleek design makes them comfortable for prolonged wear.

Design & Comfort: A Modified Classic Shape

The Freebuds 6 sport a tweaked version of the unique teardrop shape from their predecessor, the Freebuds 5. Slightly smaller and more curved, they fit more naturally inside the ear.

The difference is noticeable: I didn’t even need the silicone tips Huawei provides for extra grip because the earbuds stayed put while I sat at my desk or walked around the house. The semi-open design also gave my ear canals a welcome break after testing many in-ear models.

However, if you're a runner, be warned — these buds fall out fairly quickly during jogging sessions.

Battery Life and Daily Use

These are light enough to wear all day without feeling like a burden, only removing them for recharging. Battery life is decent: roughly 4 hours with ANC on or 6 hours without. The egg-shaped charging case provides enough juice for about five full charges.

A quick 10-minute charge delivers around two additional hours, perfect for a lunch break top-up to last through the workday.

Noise Cancellation: How Good Is It Really?

The noise cancellation here deserves a shout-out. While the semi-open design can’t block external noise as effectively as in-ear sealed earbuds, it surprisingly tackles low-frequency hums pretty well—like computer fans, vacuum robots, or air conditioners.

Listening to podcasts with dialogue, you might notice some background hiss, but switch to music, and it becomes less distracting. That said, don’t expect total silence when riding the subway.

Style and Features: Bold or Subtle?

I’m a bit on the fence about the flashy purple hue with a metallic sheen. The pearly surface resists fingerprints, and a double-tap plays or pauses music, ensuring accidental touches during adjustment don't interrupt playback.

Personally, I’d lean towards the black or white versions, which look much more understated.

Setting up the AI Life app for these earbuds is slightly more involved if you’re not using a Huawei smartphone. Installing the APK involves a few extra steps and warnings on most Android devices, which might intimidate the less tech-savvy.

Once set up, the app works well—offering customizable gesture controls, several equalizer presets, and a handy “Find my earbuds” feature. However, advanced options like spatial audio with head tracking are only available when paired with Huawei phones. Not a big loss for me, since I’m not a fan of artificially stretched soundscapes.

Sound Quality: Surprisingly Rich for Semi-Open Earbuds

What truly impressed me was the sound. I expected the semi-open design to deliver a thin, treble-heavy tone, but instead, the opposite happened.

An 11mm dynamic driver paired with a planar diaphragm produces robust bass and an excellent overall balance. While you won’t get the deep, punchy bass of in-ear sealed earbuds, tracks like “Deviant” by DEADLIFE still pack a satisfying low-end punch.

You don’t need to crank up the volume to enjoy ample bass or appreciate clear instrument separation on delicate tracks. The default equalizer setting nails it, but if you prefer sharper highs or stronger bass, the app lets you tweak the sound to your liking.

Final Thoughts: Who Are These For?

These earbuds aren't quite on par with the best in-ear models in either sound quality or noise cancellation. So, they shine best as a second pair rather than your go-to buds—but for what they are, they do an outstanding job.
