The Story Behind ‘Find Ur Ppl’

Every song has a story, and ‘Find Ur Ppl’ is especially close to jasmine.4.t’s heart. She shared that the song was penned a few years ago, during the early days of her transition when she moved to Manchester. It was a time of discovery and finding her tribe, particularly her best friend Yulia Trot (aka YBT), who offered her support and a place to stay.

“Find Ur Ppl is a song I wrote a few years ago, early in my transition. This was when I first moved to Manchester and met my community, including my best friend Yulia Trot aka YBT, who put me up on her sofa and supported me in presenting as a woman for the first time.” — jasmine.4.t

In a poignant twist, jasmine.4.t revealed that Yulia is currently imprisoned as one of the Filton 24, accused of breaking into an Israeli weapons factory in the UK, adding a layer of urgency and emotion to the song’s release.

Originally recorded for You Are The Morning (YBT Deluxe), an extended version of jasmine.4.t’s debut album dedicated to Yulia, this fresh take on ‘Find Ur Ppl’ features Jacob Alon, a cherished queer community member and recent Mercury Prize nominee.

Their collaboration is nothing short of magical. Jasmine praises Jacob’s beautiful voice and songwriting, which brought new life to the song. She’s been lucky to see Jacob perform live multiple times this year and calls working with them a "dream come true."

jasmine.4.t: Behind the Music and Inspirations

Earlier this year, jasmine.4.t (real name Jasmine Cruickshank) opened up about her musical journey and influences. A huge fan of Boygenius, she shared the joy of collaborating with community members and “unsung heroes,” highlighting the impact signing to Phoebe Bridgers’ label and touring with Lucy Dacus had on her.

“There were so many incredible moments of watching how much they love and respect each other,” she recalled. “I want to make music for the rest of my life with those guys. I fucking love those guys so much. They all brought such incredibly different things to the studio. Phoebe is so incredible at harmony and the craft of a song, the performance and was giving me such good notes. Lucy has the biggest impact on the editing of the lyrics and helping with the performance. Julien [Baker] brought so much with the guitar and I could never do that by myself.”

Jacob Alon and Their Mercury Prize Spotlight

Jacob Alon’s own story is just as captivating. The Scottish art-folk artist, recently nominated for the Mercury Prize for their debut album In Limerance, spoke about the depth and vulnerability that infuse their music.

At the Mercury Prize shortlist announcement in September, Jacob described the emotional themes of their record:

“It packs a punch. There’s this thing called The Dictionary Of Obscure Sorrows, and it has these words that describe very specific feelings. This isn’t in there, but it feels akin to that vibe. It describes this thing that I’ve done my whole life: the way that I’ve longed for versions of people that aren’t real, I’ve become infatuated and obsessed with the idea of someone rather than seeing them for who they truly are. It can become a sickness and take over your every waking thought. It traps you from really knowing someone and experiencing love.”

Jacob continues to tour across autumn and winter, building a devoted following with their richly emotional folk sound.
