John Fluevog: The Rebel Sole Changing Shoe Culture
John Fluevog: The Rebel Sole Changing Shoe Culture
John Fluevog’s rebel sole spirit blends craftsmanship and soul into shoes that celebrate individuality and joy.
Step Into a World Like No Other
Walk into any Fluevog store—from the bustling streets of Vancouver to the charming corners of Amsterdam—and you immediately sense something magical. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill fashion outlet. It’s part art gallery, part spiritual sanctuary, and part joyous rebellion against the mundane. The vibe is electric, like the shoes themselves are humming with personality.
For over 55 years, Vancouver’s own legendary designer John Fluevog has been quietly reshaping what shoes could mean. His creations aren’t about chasing fleeting trends or seeking celebrity nods. Nope. Fluevog’s journey is far more soulful—a dance between craftsmanship, whimsy, and radical self-acceptance. His shoes feel alive, like they’re whispering a comforting truth to each wearer: you’re already enough, exactly as you are.

A Legacy Rooted in Unconventional Roots
Back in the 1970s, Fluevog’s earliest designs found their home in Vancouver’s artsy Gastown neighborhood, co-created with company co-founder Peter Fox. These shoes quickly became a beacon for the cool misfits—the musicians, theater kids, spiritual seekers, and anyone who felt like they didn’t quite fit the cookie-cutter mold. Fast forward through decades, and the fan base has expanded to include drag royalty, artists, Lady Gaga, Jack White, and collectors worldwide. Jack White even joined forces with Fluevog for a special collaboration called The Idol Jack—a boot dripping with playful alt-rock energy, featuring yellow straps, embossed leather, metal hardware, and logos stamped into the footbed. It's the perfect blend of two creative rebels.
Even now, 55 years later, John Fluevog’s work remains a testament to intuition over industry trends. His shoes are still crafted in family-owned factories, still sculptural, still infused with a spiritual aura, and still a love letter to those who proudly march to the beat of their own drum.
The Man Behind the Magic: A Chat with John Fluevog
I had the chance to dive into John’s world—his craft, his inner universe, his community, and how his shoes have become more than footwear, but a mirror to who we are.

How did you build such a unique brand?
John explains, “There aren’t many companies where the owner is also the designer. That means I have complete autonomy. I design from feeling. I notice something, pause, and question why it caught my attention—then I follow that thread.”
He recalls a nugget of wisdom from Anna Sui: “Creativity starts with attention.” When we truly notice, creativity is already bubbling under the surface.
Unlike many designers, John doesn’t chase trends. Every shoe is handmade in family factories—some as far as Peru—where the craftsmen pour their humanity into every stitch. “That’s rare,” he says, emphasizing how deeply the human touch runs through his designs.
What’s the origin story of your company?
John’s ethos is simple but profound: “I’m telling people they’re okay.” Growing up dyslexic, he wrestled with feelings of inadequacy, convinced he wasn’t worthy or smart. Shoes became his vehicle to affirm, I’m okay, and he wants his customers to feel that same embrace.
“You might think you’re weird, but you’re not. You’re exactly as you were meant to be. No mistake was made.”
Who are your shoes for?
“They’re for people who are fine just being themselves. Folks who don’t need to follow rules someone else made up,” John says with a grin.
Sometimes, a design just feels right—an unexplainable harmony where colors, lines, and textures converge to create joy. And his fans? They respond to that joy, that little spark that says, “Hey, this is for you.”

Do you travel a lot?
Surprisingly, John shares, “I don’t need to travel to travel. I move forward and backward in my mind. I pick up energies from places I haven’t even been. Travel is both external and internal.”
He feels his creativity has grown richer over the decades, a true blessing after more than half a century in the shoe business.
Your shoes feel sculptural and whimsical, almost like an antidote to the heaviness of the world. What inspires that spirit?
John tries to see beyond the physical world, tapping into a place where the troubles of today fade away. “It always changes,” he reminds us, a comforting thought that fuels his optimistic designs.
What media inspires you?
While he admits to not reading much lately—concentration can be tricky—he’s been soaking in period pieces on screen. He loves how these stories portray people in their own time, not through a modern lens. Historical shoes have become a visual feast and source of inspiration for him.
What’s your creative life like?
John describes his life as ordinary but rich in observation. “I’m a watcher. Creativity lives in another world for me. When I open stores, watch factories, listen to my staff—I’m influenced by those small moments.”
Ultimately, he wants to be a conduit for the world’s energy, walking “by faith” into a wonderfully spirited life.
The John Fluevog Experience: More Than Just Shoes
John Fluevog's journey reminds us that shoes can be so much more than mere accessories. They can be vessels of self-expression, crafted with care, passion, and a touch of rebellion. With every pair, there’s an invitation to embrace your quirks, celebrate your individuality, and walk boldly in your own truth.
Are your shoes telling your story? If not, maybe it’s time to find a pair that does.
