Kitt Wakeley Turns Grief Into Sound, Redefining Classical Music’s Emotional Reach
Explore how Kitt Wakeley’s innovative classical album captures the shared emotional journey through grief, reshaping what classical music can truly be.
A Fresh Sound From Shared Grief
When Kitt Wakeley set out to compose Seven Seasons, he wasn’t interested in spinning his own tale. Instead, he chose to become a vessel for the stories of others. As a Grammy®-nominated composer and producer whose work leaps across classical, rock, Broadway, and global sounds, Wakeley has always had a flair for emotional storytelling. But Seven Seasons pushes boundaries even further: it’s a full orchestral album drawn from the collective experience of human loss.

By conducting 41 interviews with survivors of 9/11, the Oklahoma City Bombing, and individuals touched by personal tragedies—accidents, fires, tornadoes, terminal illness—Wakeley uncovered a striking truth. No matter the circumstance, everyone described grief in seven common stages, or “seasons.” This insight shaped the album into a sweeping, cinematic work that journeys through innocence, tragedy, disbelief, confusion, questioning, reflection, and finally hope.
Each movement doesn’t just play notes; it maps an emotional landscape that invites listeners to find their own place within it.

Turning Classical Music on Its Head
Classical music often carries a reputation for being formal, distant, and reserved. But Wakeley’s approach aims to break that mold. “As creatives, we often tell our stories with our music based on our experiences,” he explains. “With Seven Seasons, I wanted to flip the script and write from the listener’s experience instead.”
This listener-first mindset has become Wakeley’s signature, helping his work resonate beyond traditional classical circles. His albums feel less like typical recital pieces and more like cinematic soundtracks—rich with storytelling nuances influenced by his diverse background.
This year, Seven Seasons earned a nomination for Best Classical Compendium Album at the Grammys, representing the emotional heart of Wakeley’s busiest Grammy season yet. Besides this nod, he collected five more nominations as a producer across vocal, choral, instrumental, and chamber categories — a remarkable testament to his behind-the-scenes impact.
Yet, for Wakeley, the recognition is secondary. “The nomination is meaningful to me because it’s a reflection of the work behind the music – the hours, the collaborators, and the belief in the album’s vision,” he shares. “This was an opportunity to honor those who’ve faced tragedy in their lives and now have a story to tell. It’s a reminder that when you lead with authenticity and craft, the music can truly connect.”

A Career That Bridges Worlds
Wakeley’s journey doesn’t fit neatly in any one genre box. His collaborations span from the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic to rock legends like Joe Satriani and Nuno Bettencourt. Along the way, he's sold out Carnegie Hall, topped Billboard charts seven times, and commanded major venues across the globe.
In 2024, he produced the Grammy®-nominated Broadway album Impossible Dream by Aaron Lazar, featuring heavyweights like Sting, Josh Groban, Kristin Chenoweth, Neil Patrick Harris, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The album’s finale, a star-studded collaboration with over 40 Broadway icons, earned the affectionate nickname “We Are the World of Broadway.”
In 2025, Wakeley expanded his impact by joining the University of Oklahoma as an adjunct professor, mentoring the next generation of artists in the College of Fine Arts, Artist Management Program.
Why Seven Seasons Speaks to Us All
In a world where collective trauma often feels overwhelming and constant, Seven Seasons offers more than classical music; it presents a shared emotional language. The album doesn’t dictate how listeners should feel but acknowledges the raw, universal truths of grief.
“I’m always inspired by sincerity and emotional connection, but with this album I wanted to write from the listener’s perspective rather than my own," Wakeley explains. "I focused on shared human experiences – moments of vulnerability, reflection, and resilience – and asked how the music could recreate those emotions in a way that truly adds value to the listener’s life. The most common theme we all identify with is ‘love,’ but that theme has been covered since the beginning of time. I wanted something deeper and not so commercial, so I eventually landed on the sphere of tragedy and the journey we all go through before, during, and after.”
Seven Seasons invites you to hear your own story in its notes, no matter which emotional season you find yourself.
