Love, Hope, Strength: The Enduring Legacy of The Alarm’s Mike Peters
How Mike Peters' spirit and music continue to inspire through love, hope, and strength after his 2025 passing.
A Heartfelt Beginning: When Words Feel Hollow
It’s hard to imagine how three simple words—love, hope, and strength—could ever lose their meaning. But for Jules Peters, the wife of The Alarm’s frontman Mike Peters, these words once rang painfully hollow. They were the heart of the foundation she and Mike had built together alongside American partner James Chippendale, focused on blood cancer research and raising global awareness. Yet when Mike lost his decades-long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in April 2025, those words felt like empty echoes.
“I really felt like I’d had enough and didn’t want to continue the foundation,” Jules confesses. “I was so traumatized and thought, ‘I don’t know how I can carry on because we weren’t able to save him.’” It was a moment heavy with grief and uncertainty, but thankfully, that despair was fleeting. Jules soon realized the mission was more vital than ever.
Carrying the Torch: Love Hope Strength Foundation’s Impact
The Love Hope Strength Foundation has been a remarkable force in the fight against blood cancer. Since its inception, the organization has enrolled over 400,000 people into a global blood stem cell registry through vibrant “get on the list” events at concerts worldwide. The foundation has partnered with legendary musicians like Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne, and the Stranglers, securing thousands of potential life-saving matches for patients around the globe.
Mike himself was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant in October 2024 after finding a donor in Poland. But fate had other plans. He was diagnosed with Richter syndrome—a fierce and aggressive leukemia complication—that ultimately took his life at just 66 years old. Despite the final outcome, Jules finds comfort in the bright light Mike shone throughout his life. “He was only very ill for the last few months, and he had 66 incredible years where he shone so brightly,” she says. “Maybe we’re all born with only so much light, and he just expelled his faster than others because he was always gigging, touring, thinking.”

Home and Heart: Life After Loss in Wales
On the day of our video call, Jules welcomes us into their Welsh home, a place steeped in shared memories from nearly four decades of marriage. This is where Mike and Jules raised their sons Evan and Dylan, a sanctuary filled with echoes of classic albums from Richard Ashcroft to David Bowie—sounds that softened their breaks from touring and studio sessions. Sharing the warm atmosphere is their golden retriever, Ziggy Stardust, a nod to Mike’s musical roots.
Jules laughs recalling her bold move: buying the village pub, The Red, an idea Mike initially thought was “the craziest he’d ever heard.” Yet, the pub has blossomed into a hub of solace for the community and a living tribute to Mike. Nestled beside their chapel—where Mike recorded much of his later work—the pub is just a stone’s throw from Mike’s resting place beside a majestic 70-foot waterfall. Jules often finds herself sitting in the pub, sipping coffee, then walking to the graveyard; a beautiful, poetic closeness that feels just right.
Facing Mortality with Rock ‘n’ Roll Grit
Planning for a future without Mike was never really on the table; he never said goodbye. “He had no plan because he never believed he was going to die until much later—his 80s or 90s,” Jules recalls. Even when doctors warned that Richter syndrome’s odds were grim, Mike’s unwavering confidence prevailed: “I’ll beat those odds.”
His secret? Rock ‘n’ roll. Born and raised in North Wales, Mike’s lifelong dream was to start a band and make it big in rock music. “He was used to rejection, but he never let it get him down,” Jules says, describing how Mike knocked on London music doors one by one, ticking names off his list.
The Alarm burst onto the scene in 1981, delivering anthems like “68 Guns” and “Strength” that inspired a generation. Fellow giants U2, Simple Minds, and The Cult counted themselves as fans, with Bono famously calling The Alarm “the second greatest rock and roll band in the world.” Bono’s mentorship was priceless, teaching Mike to always give his best—no matter the crowd size.
“Play your best show as if it was 50 or as if it was 2,000.”
— Bono’s advice to Mike Peters
This mantra not only shaped Mike’s music career but also their lives. Jules and Mike embraced the resilience and optimism rock ‘n’ roll instilled, carrying that spirit through every challenge.

The Final Album: Transformation and Its Lasting Message
In late May, Jules helped release The Alarm’s final album, Transformation, a collection bursting with the same energy and hope Mike lived by. One standout track, “Live Today,” captures a bittersweet urgency with lyrics like: “Let’s talk about tomorrow when we’ve lived through today / I beg, steal, or borrow, I do whatever it takes,” and the chorus, “I don’t want to live forever / I want to live right now.”
The music video, filmed just before Mike’s CAR-T cell therapy at Manchester’s Christie cancer center, shows Mike on a northern England beach, guitar in hand, walking into the sunset—a hauntingly prophetic farewell.
Though Jules finds it hard to watch, she keeps sharing Mike’s musical legacy daily on the band’s Facebook page, posting “this day in Alarm history” memories for loyal “Alarmies.” She especially cherishes videos like Mike’s orchestral cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”
Love Beyond Time: A Partnership and Legacy
Jules met Mike when she was just 19, and their connection was instant. Engaged within a week, Mike proposed at their favorite duck pond—a sweet reminder of their youthful love. The depth of their bond is clear through Jules’ honest words: “It’s the complexity of this incredible life, you love so hard and then, like that, it’s taken away.”
Transformation isn’t just an album; it’s Mike’s message for living fully. Even from his hospital bed, Mike poured himself into the record, crafting art and music until the end. “He turned his hospital bed into a studio,” Jules recalls with a smile.
Jules is also shepherding the release of the third part of Mike’s autobiography trilogy—Love, Hope, and Strength. This trilogy mirrors the iconic Alarm song “Strength,” with its prophetic lyric: “Give me love, give me hope, give me strength.”
Turning Adversity Into Action: From Mountains to Music
The Love Hope Strength Foundation sprang to life in 2005, the same year Mike’s leukemia returned after years of remission. Jules is more determined than ever to continue their important work.
Mike’s idea was simple but powerful: transform cancer from a curse into a positive challenge. While hospitalized in 2005, he saw Snowdon—the highest mountain in Wales—and vowed to climb it with supporters to raise funds, turning it into a celebration of survival. They did exactly that—and then took it even further.
In 2007, Mike, Jules, James Chippendale, and a group of musicians including Slim Jim Phantom and Glenn Tilbrook trekked to Mount Everest’s base camp, setting a Guinness World Record for the highest land-based concert. This inspired the MTV documentary Everest Rocks (2012). The charity’s efforts funded vital medical equipment in Nepal and later African children’s cancer wards.

A Community of Strength: Life and Legacy in Motion
Despite her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2016, Jules kept the spirit alive—walking miles during chemo and transforming challenges into adventures. In 2027, the family plans to revisit Everest’s foothills, honoring Mike’s dream by scattering some of his ashes where Sir Edmund Hillary once trained.
Back home, The Red has blossomed into more than a pub—it’s a community center with salsa nights, yoga, trivia, and a BBC-produced grief podcast, helping many find comfort and connection. Jules calls it a place where “everyone’s got things to contend with,” but together, they face the ups and downs.
Plans are also underway to create a huge Alarm archive in the chapel, turning it into a pilgrimage spot for fans. The annual “The Gathering” fan meetup continues, with the next event in January 2027 near the newly renamed Mike Peters Arena.

The Alarm’s Future: Through the Next Generation
While Transformation may be Mike’s final album, The Alarm’s story continues. Their son Evan is carrying the torch with “Evan Peters Presents The Alarm,” recently touring with Big Country—a band Mike held close.
At Mike’s funeral, Evan sang Oasis’s “Wonderwall,” a song Mike had taught him, as a bird landed on Mike’s guitar—a surreal, touching moment for Jules. She believes in the powerful father-son connection, watching Evan command the stage with his father’s spirit shining through.
Honoring a Legend: Love, Hope, Strength Forever
For Jules, every step forward honors Mike’s memory and legacy. “I love the fact that this is so hard—it proves how much we loved each other,” she says. She channels her grief into positivity and community, knowing that love and resilience keep the human spirit alive.
“Otherwise, the human race would be extinct if we all expired after losing the people we love.”
Jules reflects, “There are a million people out there ahead of me that have done it, and there’ll be a million more behind me. Hopefully, if we all keep sticking together and sharing how we’re getting through it, we’ll keep surviving. That’s my plan.”
