This isn’t just another Slipknot album—it's a deep dive into the band’s creative side that most of us never expected to hear in full. The Long-Awaited Release Finally Arrives
Back in April, Look Outside Your Window made its debut during Record Store Day—but only in an ultra-limited edition that left most fans hungry for more. Only a select few were lucky enough to snag this special release, and that exclusivity only added to the mystique surrounding the project.
But here’s the good news: starting June 12, the album will be available in a variety of physical formats, giving fans more ways to enjoy this hidden gem. Options include:
- Blue transparent leaf-filled LP, limited to 250 copies
- Clear purple LP, limited to 500 copies
- Bubblegum pink LP, limited to 1,000 copies
- Silver nugget and golden pearl 12” LP versions
- A general release eco black vinyl edition
- Digipak CD for collectors who prefer a compact format
If you’re ready to add one (or more!) of these to your collection, you can browse all editions and pre-order your copy here.
A Side Project Born in 2008
What makes Look Outside Your Window so fascinating is its origin story. The album was recorded during the sessions for Slipknot’s fourth studio album, All Hope Is Gone (2008), yet it was deliberately kept separate from the band’s main studio output. This wasn’t meant to be a typical Slipknot record. Instead, it was a creative experiment, a chance for the band members to explore sounds and ideas outside the intense, mask-driven heavy metal the band is known for.
The album’s music was crafted by just four members of Slipknot, diverging from the full band’s usual collaboration. Over the years, Slipknot has teased this project—dating back to 2019—but the release was delayed multiple times, with the COVID-19 pandemic pushing things back even further. Finally, under the artist and album name Look Outside Your Window, the music has emerged for the world to hear.
The Spirit Behind ‘Look Outside Your Window’
The band shared some insight into the album’s creation during the Record Store Day release, painting a picture almost as haunting as the music itself:
“We knew we were heading down a different creative path, entirely apart from Slipknot, and we followed it eagerly. We called the project Look Outside Your Window as a tribute to this experimental spirit. Created during a chaotic time in our shared history, the songs were born late at night, in a house on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Peering out through a big picture window, we wondered about what, or who, might be lurking outside. That sense of the unknown seeped into the music itself.”
The album was a playground of sounds without rules. The band drew on anything that sparked emotion or instinct—subtle drum loops, organ bits, abstract guitar noises, even natural sounds like frogs and crickets. It was less about structure and more about capturing a mood, a feeling of mystery and exploration.
Fans React to the Experimental Vibes
When early copies of the album reached fans ahead of the official Record Store Day drop, the reactions were electric. Listeners compared Look Outside Your Window to the atmospheric and experimental sounds of Radiohead and Pink Floyd, which is quite a departure from Slipknot’s usual sonic assault. This new musical direction has been further enriched by the guest appearances of Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil, whose haunting vocals weave through several tracks, adding an ethereal touch.
Band Members Reflect on the Project
In 2024, Slipknot’s percussionist Clown opened up about the album in an interview, expressing a mix of relief and pride about finally sharing the work:
“I’m really pleased about it and happy to finally be rid of it! What’s nice though is that it isn’t a hype thing, it’s just something we did while we were doing other Slipknot albums. It was a very honest action to make music that wasn’t Slipknot, but utilized the skills of guys with no rules. I don’t know if it’s ‘good’, but I know that I love it. I make music for myself, but I hope that the people who waited and waited and waited think it was worth it too.”
His words remind us that sometimes music is about personal expression rather than commercial ambition, which might explain the album’s unique aura.
Sneak Peek: Corey Taylor on Slipknot’s Future
Corey Taylor, Slipknot’s iconic frontman, has also been candid about the band’s creative journey. In a recent video interview, he discussed the band’s ongoing evolution and future projects, hinting at exciting things on the horizon.
Meanwhile, Clown teased that management now holds the album and confirmed it’s officially on its way:
“What I can tell you is that I showed Corey the final artwork two days ago. It is happening, but unfortunately, because of Christmas and New Year and the way business works, I can’t slide it in this year.”
Entering 2026, Clown cautioned fans to temper expectations:
“It’s not Slipknot at all, not even close.”
Critical Acclaim for the Cult Classic
Despite—or perhaps because of—its experimental edge, Look Outside Your Window has earned respect from critics. One review noted how the album blends heaviness and atmosphere, anchored by Corey Taylor’s haunting vocals, to bring an eerie, almost intangible Slipknot energy without the usual masks or metal brutality. Four stars were awarded, with the album described as:
“...a seriously impressive cult classic that wouldn’t exist without The Nine, and whose unanswered mystery can finally be resolved.”
What Lies Ahead for Slipknot?
Slipknot isn’t just resting on their laurels with this archival release. Their drummer Eloy Casagrande recently revealed that the band is already cooking up new music. He shared:
“Since I joined the band, we have been working on some new ideas. We keep exchanging guitar riffs, drum beats, so we are always doing something. We had also some jam sessions.”
So, while we revel in the rediscovery of Look Outside Your Window, it’s clear the band’s creative engine is still firing on all cylinders.
