Thom Yorke Shares His Thoughts on Israel-Palestine Conflict and Social Media Witch-Hunts

Thom Yorke reveals his stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict and criticizes social media witch-hunts pressuring artists to take sides.

Thom Yorke Opens Up About the Controversy

Thom Yorke, the iconic frontman of Radiohead and The Smile, has taken to social media to clarify his position on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. This comes after an incident last October when a protester interrupted his solo show in Melbourne, leading Yorke to abruptly leave the stage.

Reflecting on that moment, Yorke admitted it was not the right time or place to debate such a complex and devastating humanitarian crisis in front of 9,000 people. He shared his shock at how his silence was interpreted as tacit support for one side, which left him mentally exhausted.

“That silence, my attempt to show respect for all those who are suffering and those who have died, and to not trivialise it in a few words, has allowed other opportunistic groups to use intimidation and defamation to fill in the blanks, and I regret giving them this chance. This has had a heavy toll on my mental health.” – Thom Yorke

A Clear Stand Against Extremism

Yorke emphasized that his artistic work reflects a lifelong resistance to extremism and the dehumanization of others, promoting free expression and empathy across boundaries.

He made his stance crystal clear: he believes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government are “totally out of control” and must be pressured internationally to stop their current actions.

“Their excuse of self-defence has long since worn thin and has been replaced by a transparent desire to take control of Gaza and the West Bank permanently,” Yorke explained. “I believe this ultra-nationalist administration has hidden itself behind a terrified and grieving people and used them to deflect any criticism, using that fear and grief to further their ultra-nationalist agenda with terrible consequences, as we see now with the horrific blockade of aid to Gaza.”

Criticism of Hamas and the Hostage Situation

Yorke also addressed the role of Hamas, especially following their brutal attack at the Israeli music festival Supernova in October 2023, where many were killed and some taken hostage.

He questioned the motives behind Hamas’s actions and pointed out the disturbing fact that many hostages haven’t been returned yet.

“Why did Hamas choose the truly horrific acts of October 7? The answer seems obvious, and I believe Hamas chooses too to hide behind the suffering of its people, in an equally cynical fashion for their own purposes.”

According to reports, 1,200 attendees lost their lives during this terror attack, and around 250 were taken captive by Hamas. Israel continues to pressure Hamas to release the remaining 58 hostages, among whom at least 20 are believed to be alive.

The Human Cost of the Conflict

The war has taken a devastating toll on Gaza, with over 54,000 people killed since the conflict escalated in 2023. The past 10 weeks alone have seen nearly 4,000 deaths amid ongoing Israeli military operations. The United Nations warns that half a million people in Gaza face catastrophic hunger due to blockades and ground campaigns.

The Pressure on Public Figures and the Problem with Social Media

Yorke expressed frustration with the intense pressure on artists and public figures to take immediate stances on such a complex issue. He criticized social media’s role in fostering polarization and fear rather than encouraging dialogue.

“Social media witch-hunts (nothing new) on either side pressurising artists and whoever they feel like that week to make statements etc do very little except heighten the tension, fear and oversimplification of what are complex problems that merit proper face-to-face debate by people who genuinely wish the killing to stop and an understanding to be found.”

He warned that simplistic messaging or reposting can have unintended consequences by deepening divisions instead of helping.

A Call for Humanity and Understanding

Concluding his statement, Yorke acknowledged that many will still attack him or those associated with him regardless of what he says. Still, he hopes his words contribute to a global yearning for peace.

“I have written this in the simple hope that I can join with the many millions of others praying for this suffering, isolation and death to stop, praying that we can collectively regain our humanity and dignity and our ability to reach understanding ... that one day soon this darkness will have passed.”

A History of Controversy Around the Topic

This isn't the first time Radiohead has faced backlash related to Israel. In 2017, the band played a show in Tel Aviv despite protests urging cancellation. The band received criticism from artists and activists, including Roger Waters and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who signed an open letter urging the band to boycott Israel.

Despite protests, including one where activists waved Palestinian flags at Glastonbury Festival, Yorke defended the decision, clarifying that playing a show doesn’t equal endorsing any government.

“Playing in a country isn’t the same as endorsing its government. We don’t endorse Netanyahu any more than Trump.” – Thom Yorke

Yorke also had a public disagreement on Twitter with director Ken Loach, who challenged the band on whether they stood with the oppressed or oppressors.

Recent Related Developments

Last year, Yorke’s bandmate Jonny Greenwood sparked debate by performing in Tel Aviv shortly after participating in protests calling for hostages' release and elections. Some accused him of "artwashing genocide," though Greenwood defended his collaborations with Israeli artists and criticized the silencing of Israeli musicians for their background.

In January 2024, fellow Radiohead member Ed O’Brien called for a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing heartbreak over the continued violence and suffering.

Looking Ahead

Rumors suggest Radiohead may hit the road again with European residency gigs scheduled for autumn 2025. Meanwhile, Yorke has been busy working on new music, including the theme for the Apple+ show Smoke, a collaborative album with Mark Pritchard titled Tall Tales, and a musical adaptation of Radiohead’s Hail To The Thief.
