Bloc Party Honored with Outstanding Song Collection Award at the Ivors 2025
Bloc Party, a legendary name in indie music, is set to receive the Outstanding Song Collection award at the Ivors 2025, celebrating their impressive legacy.
Celebrating Their Legacy
It’s official! Bloc Party has been announced as the recipients of the Outstanding Song Collection award at the Ivors 2025. This honor pays tribute to the original four members of the band—Kele Okereke, Russell Lissack, Gordon Moakes, and Matt Tong—who will be recognized at the 70th edition of the ceremony. The Ivors will take place on May 22 at the Grosvenor House in London, marking a significant acknowledgment for the band’s contributions to songwriting over their remarkable 25-year career.
A 20th Anniversary Celebration
This announcement comes amidst their current tour, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Silent Alarm. Fans have already experienced the thrill of hearing the album performed in full at London’s Crystal Palace Park, their largest headline show to date. Upcoming performances are lined up in Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, Brighton, and Torquay, along with a North American tour.
Crafting a Unique Sound
The Ivors Academy's acknowledgment shines a light on how Bloc Party has carved out their distinctive voice in music. With a fearless and ever-evolving sound, they’ve fused genres ranging from indie to electronica and house. Their 2005 breakthrough album and the five studio albums that followed showcase their brilliance as songwriters, marrying introspective lyricism with a bold, dynamic sound.
"To be recognised for songwriting is a very special thing for an artist, and receiving an Ivor Novello award for Outstanding Song Collection is a massive honour." – Kele Okereke
Connecting with Fans
Kele Okereke shared his gratitude, stating, “Even before you form a band, play a show, or record a note, you’re writing songs—it’s at the core of being an artist.” He expressed how amazing it is to see fans from all walks of life connecting with Bloc Party’s music through the years, and how the realization inspires them to push forward while reflecting on their impressive past.
Roberto Neri, CEO of The Ivors Academy, emphasized the band's impact on British music, highlighting their innovative songwriting and emotional depth. He stated, "We're proud to honour Kele, Russell, Gordon, and Matt with the Outstanding Song Collection Ivor Novello Award, recognising their craft and the impact of their work."
A Hall of Fame
With this prestigious award, Bloc Party joins an esteemed group of artists recognized for their outstanding song collections, including legends like Queen, U2, New Order, and Pulp.
In March, over 70 songwriters were nominated for the 2025 edition of the Ivor Novellos, with artists like Lola Young, RAYE, Ghetts, and Charli XCX leading the nominations. Among those vying for the Best Album award are Charli XCX with *Brat* and Ghetts with *On Purpose, With Purpose*.
Looking Ahead
In addition to celebrating the 20th anniversary of Silent Alarm, Bloc Party recently announced plans to reissue the 2005 album as a deluxe box set. Kele Okereke has teased that their upcoming record will be "very personal and confessional," focusing on the intricacies of a fleeting relationship.
As the band continues to evolve, they reflect on their past while connecting with both long-time fans and new listeners. Former bassist Gordon Moakes shared his insights on the band's enduring appeal, stating, “The positive for me is that I still earn from the songwriting for that record. If the band are playing that record, and people are listening to it, then that’s good for me.”
Since Moakes's departure in 2015, he has expressed that he didn’t see a future version of the band without Matt Tong, the original drummer, who left in 2013. Their replacements, Louise Bartle on drums and Harry Deacon on bass, have continued to keep the spirit of Bloc Party alive, though not without challenges.
The full list of winners will be revealed at the ceremony, and fans eagerly await the announcement.
