Chesky Audio LC1 Bookshelf Monitor Review: A Sound Experience Redefined

Explore the sound experience offered by the Chesky Audio LC1 Bookshelf Monitor, designed for true audio fidelity.

Introduction to the Chesky Audio LC1

Chesky Audio LC1 Bookshelf Monitor

When it comes to product development, companies often lean towards what’s known as a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). However, Lucca Chesky, the Founder and CEO of Chesky Audio, tossed that idea aside when he designed the Chesky Audio LC1 Bookshelf Monitor. Instead of adhering to the cautious methods of many seasoned firms, he forged a solid path toward creating a product that not only meets expectations but exceeds them.

So, what can you expect from the compact but powerful LC1s? Let’s dive in!

Overview of the LC1

First off, if you haven’t subscribed to our channel for updates, now's a great time! You might even want to check out our print magazine for more exclusive content.

Now, let’s get to the specs: the LC1 stands at 10 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Weighing in at 18 pounds, this little standmount packs some serious heft. Its weight comes from the single-piece, 3D-printed, multi-layer high-mass non-resonant cabinet. The price? You can grab a pair in black for just under $1,000, while opting for red or brown will set you back about $250 more.

The speaker is equipped with a 1” wide-dispersion dome tweeter, a 6.5” mid/bass driver crafted from a lightweight polypropylene cone, and dual inertially balanced 8” passive radiators.

Utilizing advanced 3D printing technology, Chesky has integrated tessellation diffraction control technology on the front baffle surrounding the tweeter. This design minimizes any diffraction that might reach the listener’s ears, ensuring a clear sound experience while keeping the speaker virtually invisible in terms of sound presence.

The industrial design of the LC1 leans towards a "form follows function" philosophy, presenting a slightly utilitarian appeal. However, the overall finish is of high quality, and the robust binding posts on the back add to the confidence in this speaker's craftsmanship.

For a debut product, I personally would prefer a focus on function over form, allowing for future iterations to enhance aesthetic appeal.

Sound Quality: The Heart of the LC1

Alright, let’s get to the juicy part—how do the LC1s sound? If you're someone who tends to stick with your favorite artists irrespective of their recording quality, you might find yourself a bit disappointed.

Chesky aimed to create a speaker that faithfully reproduces recordings as they are. Consequently, lesser-quality recordings can come off as underwhelming or even harsh. The LC1 doesn’t sugarcoat bad music; it plays it true to form, leaving no room for embellishment.

But hold on! If a recording hits the mark, the LC1s are right there, elevating the experience to new heights. Every tiny detail is delivered with precision, including the subtle sonic nuances of the environment in which the performance occurs—whether it's a natural setting or a controlled studio.

I've come across various techniques employed by sound engineers to create an illusion of space, but rarely have I noticed the distinct differences in execution—until now. The LC1s deliver such transparency that I could discern the varying levels of skill in creating that "space." If the technique was poorly executed, the artificiality of the sound was glaringly obvious.

As an audiophile, the LC1s prompted me to explore musical landscapes I hadn’t traversed before. Not only did I find new tracks, but I also discovered record labels dedicated to producing high-quality recordings for an authentic listening experience.

Take, for example, the Cosmic American Derelicts album The Twain Shall Meet. This was recorded in a 19th-century barn in Northwest Connecticut using a minimalist two-mic setup. The LC1s recreate the music in such a lifelike manner that you feel the performers' presence on stage without any isolation between them. Vocals are crisp and harmoniously balanced with the instruments.

On the flip side, Lainey Wilson’s 2023 single, Wildflowers and Wild Horses, showcased a bit of a hot mix, typical of most pop music. The LC1s reflected that accurately, but here, the bass response was noticeably weaker, around 5dB lower than expected, which caused the track to lose some of its fullness.

In addition to a spacious soundstage, the LC1s excelled in rendering dynamics realistically. During the opening track from the Latvian Radio Big Band's album, Big Band Minimalism, the trombone solo by Magnus Wiklund stood out distinctly from the rest of the band—something I hadn't experienced before.

The LC1s offered a remarkably transparent frequency response, flat from 50Hz to 20kHz—though, as expected from a speaker of this size, there’s a sharp roll-off below 50Hz. The flat response to 20kHz can be intense for some listeners. However, I found that the LC1s maintain a balanced presentation throughout, making them less fatiguing to listen to.

Conclusion: The Future of Audio

With the ability to make high-quality recordings sound astonishingly lifelike, the LC1s transform your listening room into a vibrant soundscape, enhancing your musical experience time and again.

Whether you’re a newcomer to high-end audio or a seasoned listener who appreciates analytical sound, the LC1s will deliver unfiltered music that captivates. The wealth of quality music I've rediscovered during my time with the LC1s has reignited my passion for listening.

Kudos to Lucca! If this is just the beginning of his journey in speaker design, I’m eager to see where he takes us next.
