T+A PSD 3100 HV DAC/Preamp: A Comprehensive Overview of Features and Performance

Explore the T+A PSD 3100 HV DAC/Preamp, a powerful device that combines functionality and exceptional audio quality in a large format.

Introduction to the T+A PSD 3100 HV

When the editor of this fine publication describes a DAC as ‘large’, it’s enough to raise a note of mild alarm. The T+A PSD 3100 HV DAC is indeed quite a whopper. Standing at almost 20cm tall, half a meter deep, and weighing in at 26kg, this DAC is not just big in size; it boasts a comprehensive array of functions as well.

Describing the T+A as just a ‘DAC’ is like calling Fortnum & Mason a ‘convenience store’. While it’s not entirely inaccurate, it certainly undersells the wealth of services available. The PSD 3100 HV acts as a fully functional preamplifier, operating in the analogue domain through resistor ladder-based volume control. In addition to digital inputs, it features a single RCA analogue input and a DAB/FM aerial socket. This means the T+A has the potential to serve as the complete front end of many audio systems.

Digital Connectivity is King

Digital is where the T+A PSD 3100 HV truly shines. The connectivity options are impressive, featuring USB-B, two HDMI inputs with loop out, AES, two coax inputs (one BNC and one RCA), two optical connections, and T+A’s IPA Link for SACD transfer. It utilizes the ‘Gen3’ version of T+A’s UPnP streaming platform, providing access to Qobuz, Tidal (the latter via the Connect function), UPnP access, internet radio, and AirPlay. Although the PSD 3100 HV is equipped with a Roon mod, it had not yet achieved Roon certification at the time of testing (August 2024). All functionalities are available through RCA, XLR outputs, and a 4.4mm Pentaconn headphone socket.

The decoding options for this extensive connectivity follow T+A’s practice of splitting by format. It supports PCM up to 768kHz precision, decoded by four Texas Instruments (formerly Burr Brown) PCM1795 chips running in dual differential mode. Users can choose from four filters and also switch to non-oversampling mode. DSD is also supported up to 11.2MHz via a separate decoding module with its own filters. The app makes selecting filter options a user-friendly experience.

Impressive Power Supply Design

The PSD 3100 HV features one of the most complex power supply arrangements I've encountered. While many manufacturers claim to have separated the power supply for analogue and digital sections, T+A takes it to the next level. On the rear panel of the PSD 3100 HV, there are two IEC sockets—one for digital and one for analogue—both of which must be connected for the unit to function. Fortunately, I have 24 AC sockets available, but this might be a consideration for those with more ‘conventional’ setups.

Size Considerations

Naturally, the size of the T+A PSD 3100 HV is a significant factor. This is not just any DAC; it resembles a powerful amplifier more than a digital front end, so you'll need a sturdy rack to accommodate it. However, T+A's construction of the PSD 3100 HV is impressive enough that many users will find space for it. The immaculate casework features details such as a top panel porthole that showcases the decoder—a testament to the care and attention that justifies the price tag. The controls are user-friendly, with soft-touch buttons that work seamlessly, demonstrating exceptional engineering. However, while the display is large, it’s not full-color, making some information a bit difficult to read. The remote control is a joy to use, and a work of art in its own right.

Audio Performance: Expansive and Engaging

I connected the T+A PSD 3100 HV as a line-level DAC, running via XLR into a Chord Electronics CPM2800MkII integrated amp paired with Kudos Titan 505 speakers. I didn't know what to expect, as T+A has been on a sonic journey, particularly with digital audio. The sound produced by the PSD 3100 HV is as expansive as its physical dimensions.

The opening brass of Gregory Porter’s album "Concorde" [Blue Note] is a wave of scale and texture that impressively replicates the sensation of being front and center at a live performance. When Porter begins singing, the PSD 3100 HV creates a big, confident, and immersive presentation, showcasing its unflappable quality in response to complex layers of music.

What’s especially admirable is the T+A's ability to maintain this expansive sound while also delivering energy and punch with more aggressive material. Steven Wilson’s "The Future Bites" [Caroline International] retains its relentless energy, even as the sound envelops you. Although the album features a surround mix, it’s clear that most T+A owners will likely prefer the stereo mix.

Upsampling and Preamp Performance

As excellent as the T+A is as a line-level device with PCM, it has even more to offer. I am particularly eager for T+A to secure their Roon certification because using my Roon Nucleus via the USB input and upsampling to DSD made the PSD 3100 HV sound lush and expansive. The opening track "Here" from VAST’s "Visual Audio Sensory Theater" [Elektra] gradually builds, and the T+A impressively maintains clarity while adding scale.

I also tested the T+A PSD 3100 HV with the unusual Kudos Sigao Drive external crossover system, running it as a preamp with an analogue input for a Violectric PPA V790 phono stage. This new configuration highlighted just how remarkable the T+A’s preamp section is. Its resistor ladder-based control allows for beautifully linear and ultra-fine adjustments, easily reflecting the qualities of the Violectric setup.

Uncompressed Effortlessness

The effortless quality of the T+A is also evident when using just the analogue section. A spirited listen to "Super Superabundance" [Transgressive], the vinyl reissue of the Young Knives classic, retains a ballistic edge while demonstrating enough forgiveness for less-than-perfect mastering. At no point do you find yourself thinking, "this is good for a DAC." It stands out as an excellent preamp on its own.

While FM and DAB radio may seem like a minority pursuit in modern high-fidelity, they’re welcome additions that certainly don’t detract from the device's overall performance.

Conclusion

In summary, although the T+A PSD 3100 HV is a large and costly piece of equipment, it has the capability to replace multiple components in your system, potentially freeing up that second mains socket. It delivers uncompromised performance while offering a level of musical joy that is hard not to fall in love with. The PSD 3100 HV is undeniably large but also incredibly clever and an absolute delight to experience.
